Jacob (Otto) and Martha Grossman

Yakov and Marta Grossman immigrated to Israel in 1951 from Romania, with their parents and siblings, and were sent to Kfar Shmuel.

Izu Grossman, Marta's brother, who remained in Kfar Shmuel till his last day, became the cheese manufacturer of the area; Dotan Cheese products are sold in supermarkets throughout Israel.

Marta's mother was part of the operation, as cheese production was common among ex-Romanians and passed from generation to generation.

Currently, Kfar Shmuel is a large Moshav and Marta's nephews took over the management. They market produce cheese from their own dairy and also raise sheep.

In 1954, Marta and Yakov's first son was born, and three years later, in 1957, they had a baby daughter; in 1960 the youngest son, Moshe, was born, Vered and Shaked's future husband and father, respectively.

In the past five years, Yakov and Marta passed away; Vered and Shaked tell the story of their daughter's disappearance, as they heard it from Yakov and Marta:

Marta had the baby daughter at the Rehovot Maternity Ward, now renamed Kaplan Hospital. The baby was born healthy and well. They hadn't registered her yet but planned to name her Simona. Marta remembered the baby's face all her life. She said she was born beautiful, with light skin and a forelock of black hair.

Two days after giving birth, Marta was told that the baby wasn't breathing well and passed away. No explanation was given, no body was presented, and they weren't given a death certificate. They were so stunned by this that they couldn't ask questions and simply went away empty handed.

All these years they tried to repress the disappearance of their baby, and this resulted in deep depression. Part of the trauma was expressed in that they couldn't continue living in Kfar Shmuel. The memories of the disappearance of their baby daughter were too difficult. They left Kfar Shmuel in 1969 and moved to Rishon LeZion, where they lived until they died.

Vered says that all these years Marta and Yakov told Shaked, their granddaughter, that she looks very much like their daughter who disappeared. Shaked was moved by this and the story of the baby's disappearance, leading her to contact Amram and tell her grandmother and grandfather's story.

Before Marta passed away, in her last clear moments, she shared with us that all these years she thought that her daughter was alive.
