Levana Parianta

This is the last remaining photograph of Gmarah (Levana) Parianta, daughter of two Tunisia-born parents, who immigrated in 1952 and settled in Moshav Gilat . Several months later, when Levana was a year and half old, she had conjunctivitis and fever. The doctor of the moshav where they lived, in the south of Israel, ordered to transfer her to the Hadassah hospital (in Jerusalem, very far from her home), and her parents abided. She was hospitalized and after a few days her mother and her aunt came to visit her. She had already recovered, and had a bandage over one eye - but remained in the hospital.

Why did she remain there? I asked, but I was answered only that it was like that then - nobody asked any questions.

They returned to their home.

A few days after that, a telegram was received in the moshav - saying that she was dead. My father and her uncle rushed to the hospital but hit a wall. They did not see the body, neither did they receive a death certificate nor were they given the whereabouts of her burial site. The medical staff gave them no information and they returned with empty hands.

Did they believe them? I asked, and they told me that they didn't believe the establishment would lie to them. That was then.
