Yitzhak and Miriam Baruch

My grandparents, Yitzhak and Miriam (Mary) Roslyn Baruch, immigrated from Mumbai, India to Jerusalem in 1949. The family’s origins are in Iraq (Baghdad). They married in 1951 in Jerusalem. My grandparents lived all these years in Keren Hayesod, Kiryat Bialik. My grandparents had seven children: Mazal, Ruth, the late Flora and Yossi (twins), Maggie, and Hannah who was born with a twin brother. The brother that disappeared was the twin of Hannah. My grandmother was about 40 years old when Hannah and her twin were born on the August 25, 1963 at 3 o'clock in the morning, in Rambam hospital.

Immediately after giving birth, my grandmother was told by hospital staff that the baby had fallen ill and died. They said they had wrapped up the body and taken it away without notifying her of anything. There was no death certificate and no place of burial.

My grandfather was not present at the birth. A nurse named Hadassah who worked in the health clinic in Keren Hayesod, Kiryat Bialik told my grandmother that she had given birth to a son, and that she will find out what happened.

My grandmother apparently did not understand the hint and thought the nurse was suggesting a lawsuit. But my grandmother was innocent and was afraid to deal with the authorities. It is important to note that the nurse from the health clinic always spoke to her about her son and told her to make inquiries.
